A paging file is an area on the hard drive, that Windows uses, to store crashes/conflicts of your software/hardware information. I
t is used to tell you, and Microsoft®, how to fix the problem. You can limit the space that the paging file uses, or just simply turn it off all together.
Things You’ll Need:
- Microsoft Windows Vista Operating System .
Steps To Be Followed:-
- Open 'System Properties' or simply go to: (which is much faster)C:\Windows\System32\SystemPropertiesAdvanced.exe
double click it. - go to Control Panel
- go to System Maintenance
- go to System
- Once it's open you'll see your system info.
- click the 'Advanced system settings' link located to the left
- a new window will open on 'Performance' - click on 'Settings' within Performance.
- Another window will open. Click on 'Advanced'
- On the second choice, under 'Virtual Memory', click 'Change'
- It will open that window. You will see it 'grayed out'.
- Uncheck the box.."automatically manage..." once you do, it will all become 'normal'
- There is a space for 'Custom size', 'System managed size' and 'no paging file'.
- If you choose 'Custom Size', check the bottom of the window to see what is recommended. I would set it some what above the recommended size- because Windows is known for 'paging file crashes' just because there wasn't enough space to save the file. If it recommends that you set aside 4800MB, I'd recommend at least 6 or 7MB.
- If you choose 'System Managed size' the computer will do the fit for you.
- If you choose 'No paging File', then no paging file will be kept, at all.
- Whatever you choose, once you're done, click 'Set'
If you have chosen 'No Paging File' it will alert you that it will not keep files on crashes and so forth. - Once complete, click 'Ok'
- If you have more than one drive installed, you can do this for each, not just the main drive.
