How To Set Virtual Memory Paging File In Windows Vista

A paging file is an area on the hard drive, that Windows uses, to store crashes/conflicts of your software/hardware information. IWindows Tips @ Sammyt is used to tell you, and Microsoft®, how to fix the problem. You can limit the space that the paging file uses, or just simply turn it off all together.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Microsoft Windows Vista Operating System .

Steps To Be Followed:-

  1. Open 'System Properties' or simply go to: (which is much faster)C:\Windows\System32\SystemPropertiesAdvanced.exe
    double click it.
  2. go to Control Panel
  3. go to System Maintenance
  4. go to System
  5. Once it's open you'll see your system info.
  6. click the 'Advanced system settings' link located to the left
  7. a new window will open on 'Performance' - click on 'Settings' within Performance.
  8. Another window will open. Click on 'Advanced'
  9. On the second choice, under 'Virtual Memory', click 'Change'
  10. It will open that window. You will see it 'grayed out'.
  11. Uncheck the box.."automatically manage..." once you do, it will all become 'normal'
  12. There is a space for 'Custom size', 'System managed size' and 'no paging file'.
  13. If you choose 'Custom Size', check the bottom of the window to see what is recommended. I would set it some what above the recommended size- because Windows is known for 'paging file crashes' just because there wasn't enough space to save the file. If it recommends that you set aside 4800MB, I'd recommend at least 6 or 7MB.
  14. If you choose 'System Managed size' the computer will do the fit for you.
  15. If you choose 'No paging File', then no paging file will be kept, at all.
  16. Whatever you choose, once you're done, click 'Set'
If you have chosen 'No Paging File' it will alert you that it will not keep files on crashes and so forth.
  17. Once complete, click 'Ok'
  18. If you have more than one drive installed, you can do this for each, not just the main drive.
